When a temp employee is on the job they watch their permanent counterparts benefit from employer incentives. This can be frustrating during a three month assignment knowing they won’t receive the same opportunities as others doing the same job. While temps can understand the difference it is human nature to feel this is unfair.

As a manager, it is important to make sure your temporary staff feels rewarded for their hard work and dedication to your organization. Sure everyone likes a pay check, but a little extra incentive is nice too! Not to mention, offering incentives is an excellent way to encourage employees to stay dedicated to projects and work hard to achieve success.

What can you do as a manager to help increase productivity?

3 Incentives to Implement in Your Workplace

  1. Gift Cards. An investment at local shop or restaurant for gift cards can make a very big impact on your temporary staff. It can help motivate them to work more effectively and efficiently. Provide them as a reward for excellence or create a contest where these small tokens become a big prize.
  2. Bonuses. Your staffing provider can help you establish a bonus plan for temp employees. You may be able to offer a completion bonus for anyone who completes a several month project. You may want to give a temp a reward for going above and beyond with a major task in your company.
  3. Team awards. Temps often feel like they aren’t part of the team and some permanent employees treat them poorly on the job. Stop this from happening by providing a team building incentive. Offer rewards for the entire project only if they work together.

Have you thought much about the safety differences from winter to summer in your facility? Having the right safety precautions in place during the summer months can save your company time, money, and motivate your employees to be more productive.

5 Safety Precautions to Consider this Summer.

  • Keep workers cool. Even if your facility isn’t climate controlled it is important for you to find a way to ensure that your workers don’t overheat. Overheating can cause several health problems that can lead to bigger issues and, in the worst case, even death. Provide fans or other devices that can help you team stay cool. This is especially true for work performed outdoors.
  • Awareness of health risks. Not only is it important for management to understand the health risks inherent in working in a hot environment but employees should also be trained to recognize the signs. Heat stress in the early stages can cause irritability, loss of concentration, the inability to perform common mental tasks, and loss of ability to perform physical or heavy work.
  • Established breaks. Never push your team to work to the point of exhaustion in the heat. Establish breaks that are required by your team. Don’t allow employees to work through their breaks to keep them from stressing their bodies.
  • Hydration. Always provide water for your employees throughout the day. Dehydration can also cause a number of heat related issues. Encourage your team to drink water not only on their breaks but throughout their work day.
  • First aid. Finally, several trusted members of the staff need to be trained to perform first aid if anyone experiences the signs of heat stress or if someone were to pass out due to the heat. Providing first aid before the arrival of EMTs on the scene can make a big difference in the outcome for the affected employees.

Are you on the lookout for a temporary job through the summer months? Or maybe you want something with a flexible schedule. Companies like working with temporary employees for a number of reasons. Your next temp job could be right around the corner so it is important to have the best job search technique.

4 Things You Can Do to Find Your Next Temporary Job

  • Write your resume. Even for a short term assignment it is a good idea to have a well written resume in your arsenal. Create a well formatted and easy to read resume that highlights your career accomplishments. Make sure it includes your most up to date contact information. And don’t forget your dates of employment.
  • Network in the community. Tell everyone you know or you meet that you’re in the market for a temporary job. You never know who you’re going to meet and someone may have just the right connection for you. Go to open houses and industry events to get your name out there in the community.
  • Volunteer. If you find yourself between assignments you may want to volunteer in your community. This is a great way to keep your skills up to date and to maintain a consistent work history. Sometimes volunteer roles turn into part time or temporary paid opportunities.
  • Work with a employment firm. The best way to find a temporary job is to work with a dedicated recruiter at a local staffing company. At Prosource Staffing, we have the experienced recruiters on hand to assist you with your employment search.

Not every hiring decision you will make in your career as a manager is going to be perfect. Bad hires do happen and the key is to reduce the instances of imperfection with each new experience. Learn from your own mistakes as well as the mistakes of others to improve your interviewing and hiring skills. Let’s look at the top 5 hiring mistakes you may be making and how you can avoid them in the future.

  1. Don’t treat the candidate like a number. When jobs are posted online the response can often be overwhelming. You may receive hundreds or even thousands of resumes. Some of these candidates may also contact you directly. Don’t treat any of them as a number or an imposition. You want to humanize the process as much as possible.
  2. Don’t wait for the “perfect” candidate. Many companies, especially since the recession, have started searching for only that one perfect candidate. They want individuals who check every box rather than looking for a person who can do the job and fit in well with the company. Stop thinking about the perfect candidate before you miss out on opportunities for the right hire.
  3. Don’t drag your feet with your decision. The longer you wait to make a decision the more likely it will be that the candidate will move on to another opportunity. Take your time and meet the right people, but when you talk with someone who will be a good addition to your team don’t play games with making an offer or wait to see who else is out there.
  4. Don’t leave them waiting for a response. Make sure you communicate with your candidates. If someone isn’t right for the job, let them know so they aren’t hanging on to the opportunity. Communication is important once they start as an employee as well so give each candidate the same courtesy.
  5. Don’t play games with the money. Are you familiar with the phrase “Penny wise, pound foolish?” Even if you already have an idea of what you want to pay for an employee, keep in mind that your number should be flexible. A higher paid employee will cost less over time than hiring the wrong person, paying them less, and needing to replace them. Don’t get so strict with your ideas about salary.

A lot of us get caught up in the need for employment before we really think about what we want out of our careers. What are you really searching for in a job? What do you want to be when you grow up? What do you do well? Before you ever start looking for a job you need to answer one question for yourself: what are your job goals? Here are some insights to discovering that answer and starting your search on the right foot.

  • What are you good at and how can you get better? This question is designed to help you determine your core skills and abilities. If math isn’t precisely your forte and you don’t enjoy it, then a career in accounting might not be fulfilling to you long term. Do you like variety or certainty? Do you like to stay organized or are you a more creative thinker? These questions can help you determine what you already know: what you like to do.
  • How can you make a difference? Everyone wants to know that their contribution makes a difference. What aspects of your skills can really make a difference in your community? What about within an organization? How can you be of service to others? The only way you will feel fulfilled on the job is if you feel engaged and motivated every day.
  • How can I share my knowledge with others? The best way to learn is to teach. If you have established what you are good at, how you can advance your skills by sharing them with others. This may not be a daily aspect of your job, but it can help you determine your long term goals.
  • What job would I do for free? More important than what you are good at is what you love to do. In order to be fully engaged with a job you need to be passionate about it. If there was one thing you could do even if it were for free, what would it be? This is the thing you should focus on for your career.

For years employers felt like they had the upper hand in employment negotiations. The market was saturated with qualified individuals looking for new positions after downsizing or layoff situations. However, the tables have started to turn and because of a phenomenon known as “the skills gap,” many hiring managers are actually finding fewer candidates for their open jobs. It is important to move fast in this candidate driven market so you don’t lose superstars to your competition. Here are some tips to help make the right decision.

  • Act quickly. Don’t make a hasty, on the spot decision but respect your candidate’s time while you are working through the process. Be responsive when setting up interviews and respond within a day or two even if you don’t yet have a final decision. If your candidate lets you know that they received an offer from another company and need to make a decision, don’t wait to let them know you’re interested. Tell them you would like to make an offer and are putting the information together. Ask them when they need an answer. However, if you don’t feel this candidate is right for your role be courteous and let them know so they can pursue other options.
  • Be desirable. Demonstrate to the candidate the reasons they want to work for you. In the interviews take time to show them the company culture, facility, and introduce them to some key players in the organization. Tell them about your benefits and workplace amenities. In order to attract and keep top candidates you need to offer incentives that your competitors do not.
  • Be competitive. Right after the recovery began companies felt like they were in a position to offer smaller salaries as a cost cutting measure. This is no longer possible. However, candidates are likely to accept a position that pays just a few more dollars. It is up to you to conduct research to understand what their skills are worth and offer a good salary that will encourage them to choose your company. Keep in mind that benefits, vacation days, and flexible schedules are also bargaining tools.

Many hiring managers are making use of the pre-interview phone screen. It can help them narrow down a large field of qualified candidates before setting up face to face meetings with a select few. Passing the phone interview stage is important to get to the next step in the interviewing process. Here are a few things you need to know before setting up a phone call with a prospective employer.

  • Prepare before the call. It is important that you treat the telephone interview just like you would any other. Make sure you have a quiet location to take the call free from any distractions in your household or out in public. You want to be able to focus 100% of your attention on the conversation. It really doesn’t matter what you wear but experts recommend getting ready as though it were a face to face interview. This will help put you in a professional mindset before the call. Review the job description and research the company so you can make comparisons with your experience.
  • Be thorough with your answers. The only major difference between a phone interview and a face to face meeting is the lack of body language cues. It is your job to make up for this. You won’t have props such as a portfolio or resume to visually refer to so you need to be thorough and clear in your communications. Speak confidently and be positive when you’re answering questions. The interviewer is looking for the right answers along with the right tone of voice and attitude.
  • Sell yourself and your skills. Know that each question being asked has a purpose: to determine whether or not you are worth scheduling an interview. It is your job to sell your skills and make them want to learn more. Answer their questions with concrete examples and data. Share your accomplishments and show how you would be of service to their organization if they were to hire you. What can you bring to the table that your competition cannot?
